After the Coca-Cola museum, but a few years before the 1996 Summer Olympics, Deion Sanders was the star attraction of Atlanta.  The Falcons finally got media attention on them thanks to Neon Deion.   Flamboyant would be the conservative way to describe the Neon Deion persona off the field.  On the field, flamboyant would be one way to describe his play style.  He would volunteer to defend against the legendary Jerry Rice.    The high stepping was to slow his incredible acceleration as he clearly made a run for yet another touchdown.  Yes, he slowed down for his burned defenders.

Sadly, when the 49ers picked up Deion the media spotlight went away for Atlanta until they drafted Michael Vick.  ESPN managed to run the entire Michael Vick Atlanta storyline to the ground, buried it, then reanimated its corpse only to kill it again. Continue reading

I will hold my San Francisco 49ers responsible for taking the wind off of the Carolina Panthers’ sails.  Head coach George Seifert was hired from the 49ers to Carolina in 1998 to try to improve the Panthers’ terrible record.  I’m afraid the 49ers sucked out all of the playoff energy from Seifert and other free agents that played with the 49ers before signing with the Panthers.  He helped drive a young, competitive team to a young, dysfunctional team.  Continue reading

The dark period of the ‘Aints had a few moments of light.  From 1971 to 1982 the Saints had Archie Manning at quarterback.  This generation might know him as the father of Cooper Manning (The Best That Never Was), Peyton Manning (Monsieur Fivehead) and Eli Manning (Is It Clutch Time).  Archie was an extremely talented quarterback stuck in an extremely terrible football team.  Archie was smart, athletic, and wasn’t afraid to go outside the pocket or scramble to make plays or score.  I believe that’s what you would call a Mobile Quarterback in modern sports writing lingo.   He was ahead of his time.  It makes you wonder what kind of stats Archie would put up if he was in today’s NFL (behind a competitive Saints offensive line).

Growing up, I was jealous of southern California for having three football teams.  During the 80s and part of the 90s, there were two teams in Los Angeles (the Rams and the Raiders) and one in San Diego (the Chargers).  As a kid I wondered why an area needed three teams.  I only had the 49ers as a kid.  When the Rams and the Raiders moved away, I felt bad for LA.  Later, when I realized they have two excellent college football programs (UCLA and USC), I didn’t feel as bad.  Still, there should be a pro team in the LA area to fill that void.

Red/maroon/burgundy was a popular color scheme during football’s childhood.  In fact the Cardinals inherited their original team jerseys from the University of Chicago.  (The Cardinals’ birth name is the Chicago Normals.)  The original burgundy jerseys faded to resemble a red from a certain vermillion bird indigenous to the area.

Damn it, Harbaugh we need to score touchdowns when we’re in the end zone!  As much as I love Justin (best) Smith he won’t last forever and I want our defense to still be scary as hell next season.  Colin Kaepernick deserves a raise, but I hope he doesn’t make an unreasonably high one.  The kid still needs to mature as a QB.  Please get well and get well quickly Navarro Bowman.

If you haven’t figured it out yet I’m a 49er fan.  Great work Seattle but it just emphasizes how much work my 49ers have to do.  I want Frank Gore to get a Superbowl ring while in a 49er uniform.

2013 (Superbowl XLVIII) NFL League Champions

Congratulations to the Seattle Seahawks for winning the 2013 Superbowl.  Shoutout to the Seahawks defense for stomping on the infallible Denver Broncos offense.  As much as I don’t like divisional rivals winning, I was getting tired of hearing the greatness of Peyton Manning for 2 weeks since my 49ers lost.  The old adage that defense wins championships still rings true.

Since Seattle won the Superbowl, I start my division and conference orders with the winning division first.  We’re going NFC, then AFC, then West, East, South, North.

At the beginning of the season, it was quickly determined that the road to the Superbowl involves the Seattle Seahawks.  They have all the right elements.  A nasty defense, high caliber offense, and a conspiracy theorist for a coach.  Honestly the wackiness of Seahawks head coach Pete Caroll is what keeps opposition on edge.  What the hell will this looney come up with next?  Have Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch barrel through the defense then throw the ball to back his quarterback Russell Wilson who then throws it wide receiver Golden Tate who fakes a short route?  No, actually, consider that within the realm of possibility for coach Carroll.

You know, I’m going to miss Candlestick Park.  Yes, Candlestick Park is old and totally not aligned for football, but neither was Kezar Stadium.  It’s windy and the broadcast systems are dated and it is a giant pain to park.  The original baseball dugout is in plain view, still collecting sunflower seed shells and whatever else floats in from the outside.  I’m sure the new Levi’s Stadium down in Santa Clara is going to be beautiful, with the same or worse parking issues than Candlestick.  Levi’s Stadium doesn’t have that history or urban backdrop that Candlestick has yet.  Gonna pour a forty for Candlestick when it finally does go down.

If you ever visit San Francisco, try going to Kezar Stadium when there’s a high school football game.  Kezar isn’t too far from Golden Gate Park and Haight & Ashbury.  Grab a pizza at North Beach Pizza or just hit up Kezar Pub.  It makes you feel like you’re in one of the old 49er games in the 1950s and 1960s.

The Rams have the (mis)fortune of being in the NFC West.  The division transformed from league laughing stock to that scary division on the west coast that ESPN and other East Coast media talk about in hushed tones.  If the Rams were in any other division, we would see them as those “crazy upstarts up in Saint Louie.”   While their division rivals are making all sorts of noise in the press, the Rams are away from the limelight, quietly putting together one of the youngest talented teams in the league.  Sure, this is going to take some time and that slow fuse that we find in modern TV drama plots.  Something is going on under the Gateway Arch everyone should watch out for.  Trust me, in 5 years or so the league will be playoff contenders again.
