No courtesy notifications were sent to Baltimore that a popular source of revenue/city morale is going away.  Robert Irsay just loaded a fleet of moving trucks and hauled ass to Indianapolis as soon as Indianapolis sweetened their loan deal.  So by midday of March 29, 1984 the Baltimore Colts were no more.  Robert Irsay’s Midnight Ride also took with him the Colts history he shaped in Baltimore (including Superbowl wins, historical rosters, records, and team colors). For all parties involved this situation sucked.  Baltimore Colts fans witnessed their team slide from playoff perennials to mediocrity.  They wanted their team to be relevant again yet all they witnessed were politicians and Bob Irsay playing chicken.  Baltimore legislature liked the goodwill the Colts gave them but had no money to foot the bill for stadium repairs.  Their city coffers did not have that kind of funding to support the Colts*.  Robert Irsay rightly believed that retrofitting and upgrading Memorial Stadium could help bring the Colts back to playoff contention.  Irsay also did not have that kind of funding.  Irsay also knew a good deal when he saw one.  He left for new opportunities and left Baltimore to spiral into a violent crack town in the 1980s and 1990s.  He should have left a press statement or give a press conference to explain the move to long time Baltimore Colts fans. The Baltimore Ravens with their Superbowl victories have helped ease the hurt.  There is a generation of children that only know the Ravens as their team in the Baltimore area.  Their parents and older relatives would have to retell the glory of the true team that came before, the Baltimore Colts, and the scary story of Robert Irsay’s Midnight Ride.

*  I am assuming local politicians had good intentions.  Like many local political stories I’m sure there was corruption and dick waving that played a factor into Robert Irsay’s Midnight Ride. Continue reading

After the Coca-Cola museum, but a few years before the 1996 Summer Olympics, Deion Sanders was the star attraction of Atlanta.  The Falcons finally got media attention on them thanks to Neon Deion.   Flamboyant would be the conservative way to describe the Neon Deion persona off the field.  On the field, flamboyant would be one way to describe his play style.  He would volunteer to defend against the legendary Jerry Rice.    The high stepping was to slow his incredible acceleration as he clearly made a run for yet another touchdown.  Yes, he slowed down for his burned defenders.

Sadly, when the 49ers picked up Deion the media spotlight went away for Atlanta until they drafted Michael Vick.  ESPN managed to run the entire Michael Vick Atlanta storyline to the ground, buried it, then reanimated its corpse only to kill it again. Continue reading

Growing up, I was jealous of southern California for having three football teams.  During the 80s and part of the 90s, there were two teams in Los Angeles (the Rams and the Raiders) and one in San Diego (the Chargers).  As a kid I wondered why an area needed three teams.  I only had the 49ers as a kid.  When the Rams and the Raiders moved away, I felt bad for LA.  Later, when I realized they have two excellent college football programs (UCLA and USC), I didn’t feel as bad.  Still, there should be a pro team in the LA area to fill that void.

Damn it, Harbaugh we need to score touchdowns when we’re in the end zone!  As much as I love Justin (best) Smith he won’t last forever and I want our defense to still be scary as hell next season.  Colin Kaepernick deserves a raise, but I hope he doesn’t make an unreasonably high one.  The kid still needs to mature as a QB.  Please get well and get well quickly Navarro Bowman.

If you haven’t figured it out yet I’m a 49er fan.  Great work Seattle but it just emphasizes how much work my 49ers have to do.  I want Frank Gore to get a Superbowl ring while in a 49er uniform.
